We had some sad news on Friday...when we found out that our old friend John McGuiness had died.
He was only 56.
We were friends with John during our year at Wigan Tech. He went on to study art at Preston. He was really talented.
While we were at tech...we would go round to his house and listen to his crazy music collection. Declan reminded me how John was a big Frank Zappa fan. Terence remembers how John gave him a Loudon Wainwright cassette...our first taste of the great man.
We lost touch with each other in recent years. I feel sad that we had nt spoken to him for a while.
He was a lovely man. Quiet and kind. x

In my shell.

Laura said (after our night out in Manchester...) "it was nice to see Jill come out of her shell"
I said..." I quite like it inside my shell" !!!!!

While we were out, Laura said " I ve known you all my life"
This is true...and it made me cry.
I first met Laura when she was 3....its hard to believe.
I have watched her grow up...and I am really proud of her.

I suppose hes searching for food and scraps in this cold weather. He seems to have a bad leg....and runs round in circles a lot...as if hes chasing his own tail. Wilson is keeping a low profile. Best to keep out of the way.
Seeing wildlife passing by, really does make me smile.

"Carry on Decorating"

We spent most of this weekend in Terences Mums bathroom. Terence struggled to fit the new bath panel...I struggled to build the new cabinet...and at one point we all got stuck in the bathroom as we tried to sort out the door handle. It was all good fun....Jenny had stripped the wallpaper before we got there....and Paul came up to help. We think a dark flooring would look nice against the minty green colour....and Terences Mum said she d like to do some stencilling as a finishing touch.

Out on the town.

We went to Canal Street in Manchester on Saturday night, to help Laura celebrate her 18th birthday. We went to 3 bars. Laura had a really good time....a few Archers and lemonade... a dance with Terence.....and a kebab at the bus stop.
We took this cheeky photo in bar number 2.

Well done to Jeremy, Sacha and Hugh.... for gracing the Golden Globes awards ceremony with such lovely beards. I hadnt realized how handsome Sacha Baron Cohen is in real life.

National Assembly for Wales.

National Assembly for Wales.
Originally uploaded by terry Dixon.
We visited the new National Assembly for Wales building yesterday, on our way to see Cathy, Graham and The Rhos.
It is very impressive both inside and out. It looks out onto Cardiff Bay.
"The Senedd,s main structural elements are a stepped concrete plinth and an undulating roof, separated by a transparent facade. The heart of the building is a beautiful funnel structure, which creates a circular space for the new Siambr (chamber)."

Rhosyn is getting taller and taller. She has a great new toy...a rocking sheep....(like a rocking horse). Other favourite toys are Rolly Mole....and a doll which speaks in a northern accent. We bought her some wellies but they were too small. We ll have to change them for a bigger size.

Cursed Sleep (Bonnie Prince Billy)

We are going to see Bonnie Prince Billy in concert this month.
Here he is with a beautiful song....and a lovely, crazy video.....wrestling with ET!!!!

Deer in the Garden

Lets all build a teepee .....

One of my "things to do in the new year" is.... with the help of Tel....to build a teepee in the field.
It seems to me....that it would be the perfect place to sit....read....rest....and watch the world go by. Well maybe watch a wood pidgeon go by!!!!
How difficult can it be? I think we ll need a few long poles ...some waterproof tarpaulin stuff.....a bit of rope...and we're away.
Its definitely at the top of my list....followed closely by.... growing my finger nails....eating less chipsticks....drinking more water and writing to Johnny Kingdom to say that we love deer too.

U3A

I have joined the University of The 3rd Age this week.
It is a "unique and exciting self help educational movement for people no longer in full time work".
It is where older people can get together and share educational, creative and leisure activities.
The 3rd Age refers to the period of time after the First Age of Childhood.....and the Second Age of full time employment.....there is no age limit.
There are 550 U3As in the UK involving nearly 142,000 people.
It is called a university, but it has members not students.
No qualifications are required.

Because of obvious confidentiality issues...I cannot discuss specific people or stories..... but I can say that the U3A has been a real highlight of my job so far....and the enthusiasm of the other members has been inspiring.
