High River

The River is very high today.....thats what happens when it rains a lot!!!!
Its quite exciting to see a fast flowing river....it only seems like a couple of weeks since it was low and peaceful.
We are battening down the hatches for our first full winter here. You really do see and feel the weather here. The trees are bare now. Our neighbours say they look forward to the winter because there is hardly any gardening to do.....thats a good point. Maybe a bit of cutting back....and then we can down tools till April????

Holy Focaccia.

David Guest is superb entertainment. We, the great british public, always warm to an oddball.....an eccentric character....and David Guest is one of the best.
In last weeks Screen Burn, Charlie Brooker wrote about David Guests hair.....
"his hair, which doesnt seem to be hair at all, but rather some kind of fine black smoke, loosely enveloping his scalp like a faint atmospheric haze. Whenever the sun hits it, it turns semi translucent and looks like a force field effect from a computer game. This alone makes him the most interesting person in camp."

Cool place.....cool artwork......Koffee Pot.

Manchester

It was a busy and tiring couple of days in Manchester, at the weekend. We went up with Dave and Anna....to do some shopping and look around some galleries and museums. Manchester was busy and grey and rainy..... the hotel rooms had great bathroom pods.....the people were friendly. We had breakfast at the Koffee Pot ...met the red post box that survived the IRA bomb in 1996....popped into Harvey Nichols and Selfridges....and had a night out at Obsidian. On Sunday morning there was a very moving Rememberance Sunday service in St Peters Square. It was a fitting day to visit the impressive War Museum at Salford Quays.

The Transporter Bridge.

The Transporter Bridge.

The Newport Transporter Bridge is one of only three fully working transporter bridges in the world. This year it celebrated its 100th birthday. There was a lovely programme about it, on BBC Radio Wales last night....with interviews with local people. One lady who lives nearby said the bridge is like a back door to Pill......a way out. A man who runs a pet shop there said its really handy when he's giving people directions to the shop....."its left at the transporter bridge."
Terence loved the bridge when he was at college in Newport...and when it was refurbished in 1995 we took a trip in the gondola. It is a fantastic landmark for Newport.

Australia 12 - 23 Gt Britain
There is a rugby league tri nations competition going on in Australia at the moment....and on saturday morning Gt Britain pulled off an amazing win against the kangaroos. There had been lots of "pommie bashing" in the Australian media...and on the pitch too. Willie Mason started the game by punching Sean Long.....Sean Long later said...."he s a big guy and thats what test football is all about. You ve got to have a bit of biff, otherwise its not worth playing." Willie Mason got a one match ban. Sean Long is from Wigan ...but plays for the enemy...St Helens. Hes had many disasterous hairstyles over the years....but has now sorted that out and is playing well for his country.

"Califunctious"

And the award for the best firework goes to.....
Mega Fountain
Golden Nuggets
Autumn Colours
Fujiyama
Cuckoo Cuckoo
Silver Glittering
Star Candle
Rainbow Colour Fountain
Night Siren
Purple Butterfly
Whizz Wheel.
It was a lovely occasion....having our friends and their lovely children here...and letting fireworks off in the field. Tel built a bonfire in the morning and then when James Anna and Lara arrived, they helped us to collect extra logs and twigs from the woods. It was fun with a capital F......or as Anna might say...it was califunctious.

Well when mark and Lou came over with their kids we had a big bonfire and sparkles and at the end fireworks
( Mark showed his bum at the neighbours (( by accident)) )
but the next day we went Through the forest and it was so funny because everyone was tripping over vines and roots and All sorts of things so when we were in there everyone was trying to swing on vines.

Double trouble...

Had a couple of little probs this week.....

On Tuesday night we had a power cut....its very dark up here without any house or street lights. The only light we could see was next doors pumpkin outside their house.....spooky. We scrambled around for candles and torches....and resorted to listening to the radio by candlelight. I was quite enjoying this... until the power came back on and Tel put ITV on to watch the Champions League!!! Oh... the romance.

And yesterday, I had smoke coming into my car through the heating vents. I made it to Ross and saw my 2 participants...but on the way home it started pouring in again. I thought...this isnt a good sign. So I pulled over...called the AA.... and they picked me up really quickly....just before it went dark. Trust me to break down on the day temperatures round here dropped dramatically!!! The Citroen has been at the garage all day today...and I can pick it up tomorrow.
