Treasure Island
The company I am now working for...also runs a second hand furniture shop in Hereford. Its called Treasure Island. They have a good selection of furniture in the shop.....but they also have a big storage area attached to the offices...which is just bursting with second hand stuff. The man in charge there is called Roger. I keep finding reasons to go and see Roger!!!!!!
I have already bought an extendable dining table.....for £20. And this week I bought 4 chairs (above) to go with the table.... for another £20.
I am definitely a second hand person.....I love picking up a bargain. But mostly I find second hand furniture much more interesting than modern furniture. Modern things can be so drab and dreary. And I do sort of wonder who would have sat on these chairs...and around this table before they came to me?

"Breathe Me"....Sia
In March 2005, I heard this record playing in a bar in Australia.
Not long ago I heard it playing in River Island in Newport.
You know how frustrating it is when you hear a great tune...but have no idea what its called or who its by.
Thanks to I Tunes....I have found it.
Forget River Island....it just takes me back to Hook Island.

Extreme gardening.
Yesterday we planted our new border...and put wire fencing around it to keep the hungry deer away. We spent all afternoon strimming, digging, planting, watering. While other young couples are out shopping and drinking cappuccinos, we are up to our necks in compost!!!!! Gardening in hot and humid weather is not a good idea....the garage, where we keep all our equipment is not exactly handy....so there is lots of walking backwards and forwards to get things. Hopefully in the future we will get a small shed or greenhouse that is actually 'in the garden' so its easier to get to our tools.
We are now hoping that our new plants will grow upwards and outwards, and create a colourful border.

Ross on Wye.
As part of the training for my new job.... I have to get to know Ross and the surrounding areas. I have been a few times in the last couple of weeks, and it seems like a nice place. It is an historic market town overlooking the River Wye. In the town centre, there is a 17th century market hall. So far I have found the library and tourist information centre. There is also a big community centre which I will be visiting as part of the job. I can already see that "community" is very important in these rural towns...community transport, groups, clubs, events.
Being out and about ....is all new to me. Most of my previous jobs have been in one building...and behind a desk. Driving from here to the office in Hereford, along country lanes, listening to Mark Radcliffe on Radio 2....is quite nice really.
I m still trying to get to grips with the times sheets, expenses forms etc....remembering everyones names...driving around with a map in one hand (unfortunately maps dont tell you about one way systems!!!)...and understanding the main aims of the job. Lots to think about.

Big kid.
Before we hit the Hog Roast, we went for a walk with Sophie and Mauri. We came across a field where the farmer was on his tractor, making big bales of hay. Nice hair action.
The Main Event.
It was the 8th Annual Hog Roast and Music Night on the village green yesterday. Last year (we heard) the weather was bad and the event was a washout. Yesterday the weather was glorious and hundreds of local people turned up to show their support .
There was lots of "hog" to eat...and a veggie option. You could rent a bale of hay for £1.50 .....play on the bouncy castle and have your face painted. The bands were quite good. There was the all girl group "Underwired" ...and "CJD" who rounded of the night with some crazy covers. We all had a lot to drink....and didnt get to bed till 1 am. Oh dear.

Future hedgerow.
From left to right....
Photinia
Ivy
Dogwood
Laurel
Forsythia
Sollya
We also have some bamboo and a honeysuckle to go with them.
The plan is to create a varied hedgerow....there will be reds , yellows and blues. We will need to protect them from the deer. This will be the biggest challenge.

Great colours.
I love these framed pieces of tapestry. I found the orange one in Monmouth, the blue one in The Lake District and the yellow one in Cardiff. I think they look really good hanging together on the wall.
Gin and Tonic.
Ros and Roy came to stay at the weekend ...and it was lovely to see them.It was great to show them around our new house, the village and the area. They loved the garden and the field.... and the location of the house. We were lucky enough to see some deer at the top of the field...we dragged ourselves away from watching The World Cup Final to get the binoculars out for a minute. We went to a local garden centre and Roy bought us a great selection of shrubs and plants to start off our border at the side of the garden....he said that hanging small bars of soap around new plants, will put the deer off. Could be worth a try.
Ros and Roy have known me all my life really. Ros said she first saw me at church with my Mum and Dad, when I was 5 weeks old. Ros, Roy, Mike and Jane have been my family for the past 17 years....and they mean the world to me.
The funny thing is....( and we spent most of the weekend laughing about this).....when we get together Ros always gets my name mixed up with Janes name. During the 4 years that I lived with them, Ros would usually call me "Jean" or "Jail". This weekend it was "Gin". So Tel became "Tonic". She also called Tel, "Brian" a few times.
Mike and his wife are having a baby in the next week or two. If its a girl they might call it Jessica.....another "J" for Ros to deal with.!!!!!

"There is a light that never goes out"
Is there anything better, than driving in your little car listening to The Smiths? Morrissey and those perfect songs. Brilliant.

Over and out.
Its time to take down the wall charts...put away the flags...and rip up the betting slips.
A nation disappointed again.
